Title: The Greatest Trick, (10)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 232
Pairing: Raoul/Sabine
Round/Fight: 1/G
Summary: Ahuda and Sabine discuss the odd man.
The two women studied the sleeping man. Apparently, from his drugged, just coherent, tale, he was one Raoul of Goldenlake, knight of Tortall, though his version of Tortall was much different than the reality they knew.
“He was telling the truth the entire time,” confirmed Ahuda, gesturing to the white stone in her hand. It would have turned black with a lie, grey with a half-truth. “Or at least, the truth as he sees it.”
Lady Sabine frowned. “He must be mad, then. That house has been in my family for generations; it could not have been his as he claims”
Ahuda shrugged. “He does not have the look of a madman.”
“He was remarkably skilled with a blade,” Sabine admitted. “Easily better than most knights.”
“Odd, and even odder that he seemed to trust you. He was very open, even with the truth spell on the water. It should not have affected him so strongly.”
Sabine did not answer immediately, her brown eyes fixed on the face that twitched in pain, even in sleep. “I drop my charges against him,” she said slowly, thoughtfully. “And I’ll pay for a healer for him, at least enough that his broken bones set right. He’s confused and weak. There will be no concern about him overpowering me, not for a while.”
Ahuda’s sharp black eyes fixed on the lady knight. “Are you certain?”
Sabine stroked her chin. “Yes. I’d like him to stay here for a time, at least until he agrees not to skewer me - or attempt to - then I’ll take him off your hands.” She dropped two silver nobles into Ahuda’s hand. “That’s for the healer, the best it can buy.”
She paused before she left the kennel. “Sir Raoul of Goldenlake,” Sabine murmured. “I certainly look forward to getting to know you.”
