Title: The Greatest Trick, (7)
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 314
Pairing: Raoul/Sabine
Round/Fight: 1/G
Summary: Raoul awakens in the Cages. Rating for implied torture.
Raoul woke up when someone dumped a pitcher-full of dirty water on him. He sputtered awake, blinking rapidly and shaking his head like a dog to clear his vision.
His eyes focused on an ugly man in the uniform of the Provost’s Guard, nose broken at least thrice, squinting eyes set too close together, and a nasty sneer that revealed a mouth of broken and missing teeth.
“Well, aren’t you lovely,” muttered Raoul. The guard, if he was one, must have heard, for he laid a solid blow on Raoul’s aching jaw. His mouth filled up with blood and he spat it at the man, who cursed and hit the knight again. This time Raoul had the sense to spit on the floor.
“This’un ‘ill be fun,” said the guard, grinning.
Raoul didn’t get the chance to draw enough breath to scream. He withheld talking for as long as possible - this couldn’t be an actual guardsmen, had he been kidnapped? - but eventually even his self-control broke and he screamed at first, then whimpered, that he was Sir Raoul of Goldenlake. He knew nothing more as he descended into his dark dungeon of hell.
He woke up momentarily at the sudden absence of pain and to fierce arguing. With the last of his strength, Raoul wrenched open his eyes and watched a blurry image of the angry brown-eyed woman as she gestured vehemently towards him.
He felt profoundly grateful towards her. If she argued for his continued torture, then he’d be dead. If she argued for his life, then, well, he’d be alive. He supposed that was a good thing.
In his half-awake state, her name emerged from the shadowy corners of his mind and rose to his lips; he whispered, “Sabine.”
Raoul’s last vision was of the scowling woman as she turned to him, a question on her lips. He would like to think that he would have answered, but he couldn’t make out the words and could only respond with a slight groan of agony.
