Title: And Man Must Have His Mate, 3 Rating: G Word Count: 217 Pairing: Raoul/Sabine Round/Fight: 1/G Summary: Raoul and Sabine go riding. Raoul wants to be impressive. A/N: Part 3 of my ATGB series.
They met up in the stables; it was a reasonably warm winter’s day and it would have been a shame to waste it with any other activity that wasn’t riding.
They conversed about a great number of subjects—or rather, Sabine did. Raoul kept his sentences short, and he bushed a great deal. Occasionally he would blurt out an entire paragraph, but then he wouldn’t so much as nod for the next twenty minutes and Sabine took charge of speaking.
She made him nervous. He was terrified of saying something foolish, but he also longed to impress her somehow. He wanted to prove himself worthy of her attention, and had no idea how.
And then she suggested a race. He agreed enthusiastically. If he won on his borrowed horse, surely she’d be impressed? But the closer they got to their pronounced finish line, the more an absurd thought pushed its’ way to the front of his mind: Lose.
Lose? But… He looked over at her, their horses neck and neck. He should let her win. That could be impressive.
Attempting to be subtle, he allowed her to overtake him just as they reached the end.
“You let me win,” she accused, but she appeared amused all the same.
Raoul shrugged and did his best to look innocent.
