Title: Play It Sam, 3
Rating: PG
Word Count:
Pairing: Dark Knight
Round/Fight: 2/D
Summary: Gary and Sabine have a chat. Sort of.
AN: Part 3 of the sequel series. Which takes place during Kel's second (?) year as a squire to Raoul. It's the midwinter where they don't have a billion parties.
Gary saw her come in; it killed him that all he could do from where he stood was to hope Raoul was in another room, but fate, it seemed, had other plans. He watched Raoul’s confusion transform to a hard glare he hadn’t seen in years. He turned his head back quickly to her; she hadn’t seen him yet—he was almost certain.
After a moment, the man she’d arrived with left her side and, excusing himself from his small circle, he made his way to her. She saw him almost immediately and he nodded towards the door.
They walked in silence out to the gardens—ridiculously frigid this time of year, he’d never understand why anyone would escape here.
“Is the rose trellis still here?” Her words broke the uneasy quiet between them.
He bit his tongue. She would find it overgrown soon enough—Raoul had long since exchanged the hidden garden spot for the more conspicuous—and warmer—curtains as his escape during social functions.
It seemed that someone still cared for the small alcove behind the roses though, and that was where he found himself, sitting beside her. They sat without speaking for several seconds. There was only so long anyone could expect Gary to keep quiet.
“What are you doing here, Sabine? Raoul spent years attempting to forget you, and showing up now—just when he was starting to get the right ideas about Buri—and you, with another man, you’re going to hurt him again. I can’t let you do that, so you’re going to have to leave. Go back. Tonight would be best, so he can move on quickly—“
He would have gone on, but he was stunned by the tear that trickled down her cheek—Raoul’s warrior woman.
