Midwinter Advent Prompt: #1 - Winter
Summary: Owen has been waiting for winter.
“Tomorrow starts the beginning of Midwinter,” Owen said unnecessarily to one of the palace guards. They stood on the wall, observing the city that splayed out below.
“Quite right, Squire Owen,” the guard, a man named Terin who as only two or three years Owen’s senior, replied with a small smile. “And we finally have some wintry weather to show for it. Are ye worried?”
“About my Ordeal?”
“Course. What else would ye be worryin’ about?”
Owen snorted and rubbed his freezing hands together. “Believe me, there’s plenty to boggle my mind right about now.” He thought of Margarry and the conversation he’d had with Lord Wyldon on the road south. “Are you married, Terin?”
“Nyah,” he replied. “Haven’t had th’ chance to find a maiden to my likin’. Are you fixin’ to marry so young?”
Owen shrugged. “I have to survive my Ordeal first.”
“Where did ye meet th’ little lady?” Terin asked.
“Cavall.”
“With my lord?”
Owen nodded. “She’s his daughter – his youngest. And, well, she’s supposed to be wintering here for the Season. But she hasn’t arrived yet.”
“So that’s why ye’ve spent every mornin’ on this wall, I take it?”
Scuffing his toe against the hard stone, Owen blushed. “It’s the best place to look out for incoming wagons and riders and such.”
“Yes – that’s the idea of it, puttin’ guards up here. To keep an eye on things.” He nodded to an incoming caravan of merchants just coming through the gates. Several carriages trailed the line of wagons, and the riders at the very back had the Cavall coat of arms displayed. “Looks like ye got yer Midwinter present early,” he said, cuffing Owen lightly.
“She made it!” Owen cried, jumping in delight and thumping Terin’s back. “I should find my lord and let him know that they’ve arrived.” He paused, though, waiting to watch Margarry climb out of the carriage. She wore a dark red fur-lined cloak that stood out against the snow-covered world, and her dark blonde curls were loose and whipping into her face. She looked up – likely at the turrets and towers of the impressive palace – and smiled, and he fell in love with her all over again. Even from as far away as he was, he could see what an elegant woman she’d grown into.
“She’s a right pretty thing,” Terin acknowledged. “I might think about marryin’, if I knew a lass like her.”
Owen glanced away from her long enough to grin at the guard. “My lord has already given his blessing. I just need to become a knight and get her to say yes.”
Seeing him, she waved her arm wildly. “Hello, Squire Owen!” she shouted – and was immediately pulled aside and chastised by her mother.
Terin grinned at Owen. “I can see why ye like her – she’s just like you!”
