Alanna shows him how to dream. Of a Tortall they have yet to see, of the thrill of first love, of the destiny he can still create.
Alan is dutiful and sulky in the presence of the Court, but among their friends and themselves alone, Alan -- Alanna -- turns bold and unguarded. She hides frogs in Jon’s pillow and fires snowballs at his back.
“I’ll miss this when I leave,” she confesses, and studies the melting snow in her palm. “But I know it will be worth it when I ride on the battlefield, a knight, flying your standard. I’ll remember this feeling then.”
“Don’t forget.”
“Never.”
She quirks him a grin in promise and lobs a handful of snow into his face. Laughing, she dashes off and prompts him to admire the beauty of rich violet. To recognise the bearing of real power in ordinary people. And to value, above all, the colour of equality.
