When Jonathan is nearly nine, his father takes him to watch the pages. He sways on the tips of his toes to look over the turret, his breath caught by the sea of bright red and gold below.
“You will be joining them next year,” his father says. “And we hope that you will turn out a fine warrior and a great scholar.”
Jonathan chews on his bottom lip, his chest feeling suddenly heavy. “Isn’t it enough to be an excellent swordsman and a good leader?”
His father turns to look down at Jon. “One day, they will be yours, Jon. As their king, you must earn their loyalty. And that requires more than just your fighting skills. It also requires your wisdom, and your kindness. These are strengths you don’t learn from practice, my prince, but from others.”
