Title: Backfire
Rating: G
Prompt: #16 Lies
Words: 330
Summary: “I did it. It was an accident.” There, she’d said it.
The usual paleness of the skin around Lorine’s left eye was an ugly, devastating red. Fast, agonizing tears were escaping both her eyes, and Beka’s gut twisted painfully for her sister.
“Who did it?” The controlled voice might’ve been soft, but everyone present could hear the anger underneath. “Didn’t I say to stop fighting? And now look what’s happened.” Only silence met Nestor’s question. “Speak up.”
Beka’s fist clenched as she stared at Diona fiercely. The ten-year-old glared back, a challenge in her eyes that had no right to be there after she had thrown an unexpected punch that Lorine had dumbly, but bravely jumped in to catch.
Nestor hardly ever got upset, but when he did, none of them could utter a sound. “I’ll have all of you punished if no one fesses up.”
Unable to bear it if her siblings suffered anything at all, Beka sucked in a deep breath. She knew Diona was too proud to ever admit it was her, especially in front of Nestor.
“I did it. It was an accident.” There, she’d said it. She ignored the way Will’s head whipped to look at her in shock, and how Lorine’s unhurt eye widened. Lifting her chin, she caught Nestor’s stare and made sure her lie sounded like the truth. “Diona was annoying me and she needed to be taught a le—”
“That’s enough,” was the rough reply. There was disbelief in Nestor’s voice, but a wealth of disappointment too. “I thought you knew better, Beka. Get out of here and wait in my lord’s library.”
Sucking up the flare of pain the dismissal brought, Beka gathered herself up and strode to the door. As she passed Diona, Beka saw the way her sister’s sombre expression deliberately changed to a foreign, satisfied smirk. Beka turned away quickly, realising something important.
She was a fool. A fool for ever thinking that Diona would love her again for doing something as heroic as taking the blame.
