Title: Life, Suspended Rating: PG Series: post-PotS Summary: Knightmasters are not supposed to die when their squires are only fifteen, and Jasson of Conté doesn’t know what to do.
A/N: I was fleshing out backstory for a character and this plotbunny socked me in the face. Don’t even know if I’m going to use it, but it demanded to be written.
------
It happens so fast the squire barely knows what to do. The conservative knight’s lance drives into Sir Merovec of Nond’s breastplate, and Sir Merovec tumbles to the ground and hurts his back while the ends of his broken ribs pierce a lung and blood slowly fills it.
Jasson of Conté doesn’t even spare the time to stare; he is too busy ducking under the fence and running onto the field to help his knight-master, and to calm the nervously prancing destrier before he staves his master’s skull in.
Later, when a shaken Lady Adalia has been sedated and sent to bed by Sir Nealan, and the children have been told a story and fallen asleep, Jasson sits by the rack that holds Sir Merovec’s weapons, cross-legged on the floor with a candle to light him, methodically cleaning a dead man’s armour.
He does not know what else to do.

Wow. In four short paragraphs, you have captured so much emotion. Very beautiful and sad.
The very last line was so sad; Jasson reminded me of a little lost duckling.

Wow, you captured the emotion so well in this. Poor Jasson, he does seem like a little lost duckling.

Oh, this is beautiful! You really capture the shock and sense of unreality.

This was superb! I love how much you brought the shadows into light; we always hear about knights dying on the battlefield, but how about all the knights who didn't? The knights like your Sir Merovoc, and how his squire would react to that
