Title: Explanation
Rating: PG
Length: 331 (oh. yeah.)
Competitor: Uline
Round/Fight: 1/H
Summary: Because in my head, this is how the whole Kieran thing fits into the mix.
‘You don’t think I love him,’ Uline says softly.
She doesn’t reply. Can’t bear to.
‘Or, if I do, what kind of a monster am I to be here with you while he’s away fighting?’
She can feel the heat in her throat which preludes tears, so walks over to the window to stare at the sun.
‘Keladry – ’ why do you always use my full name? she wishes she were brave enough to ask, but Blayce’s machines were easier to confront than the girl who comes up behind her, wraps her slender arms around her waist and rests her head against her back. ‘– Kieran is my dearest friend. We are alike in so many ways, and I have known him all my life.’
The words hurt, in a way words have never hurt her before – not when she was an awkward child and everyone called her names, not when she was the Girl, and people went even as far as kidnapping to try and destroy her, and only the ones we love truly have the power to hurt us, says Uline’s voice in her head.
‘But… when you were a page, you knew a boy from Disart, didn’t you?’
She nods, not trusting herself to speak.
‘He is to Kieran what you are to me.’
She freezes, and Uline lets her go.
‘We married for duty, Kel, not for love. We… couldn’t.’
‘So when you – when you say that about Balduin…’ but this talking around things is a gift of Neal and Uline’s, has never been her strongpoint, and she gives in. ‘Then what am I to you?’
Heart hammering in her chest now, the fateful words uttered aloud, she tries to lock her hands behind her back but Uline doesn’t let her, taking her hand to her chest so that Kel can feel through her palm the slow, steady beat of Uline’s own heart, and is soothed by it.
‘You knew already,’ says Uline, after a pause. ‘But I’m sorry if I scared you.’
