Title: The Hyacinth Girl Rating: PG Length: 209 Competitor: Uline Round/Fight: 1/H Summary: And they say April is the cruellest month... Loss in drabble form (which fails, but it's nearly 2am here)
It is always hyacinths with Uline. Always will be. The stems so supple and fragile all at once (requiring a greater level of delicacy from fingers more used to steel and leather) the curl of the petals that catch every available drop of rain and daylight, gleaming (like her hair, never really needing the jewels that glitter in the night sky of it), the haunting fragrance of them (a taste lifted from soft vanilla skin that lingers in her mouth, so many hours and days later).
There are stories about hyacinth flowers; a god who fell in love with a boy so beautiful that, when he died, the god who had loved him brought them into the world in his memory.
It isn’t until she sees Uline, lying – pale, but still shining (like the moon, or a star that has disappeared without ceasing to burn in the heavens) – in the mahogany box, surrounded by shining flowers that Kel realises she is the god of this story, helplessly in love. Knows in the hollow part of her body (where her heart used to be) that no amount of hyacinths will let her touch Uline again. Hear her musical laughter.
Accepts that flowers do not carry the voices of the dead.

Wow, there is just this delicateness to the piece that jumps out and touches. I love the eloquent way you portrayed Kel's perspective, and how much she adored Uline.

Oh god.
I can't find words for the power of this. It hurts but it's wonderful. Simply gorgeous.
I'd ask you to please warn for character death... but half of the power is in the way I didn't know what was happening until the mahogany box.
