“I do wish you’d been a runt like me,” she’d said to Kel, the first time they properly met. She thought about those words often, in the ensuing years. If Kel had been small like Alanna, and became a knight, then she’d have really shown them what a woman is capable of.
But then she wouldn’t be Keladry anymore. If she were smaller, most women wouldn’t have to look up to meet her eyes, and they wouldn’t be as in awe of her. If she were shorter, men would look down at her, and sadly, that would impact on her standing in some stupid men’s minds. If she were lighter, she wouldn’t be so accomplished at jousting, and blooded knights wouldn’t look at her with appreciation in their gaze.
If she were any different, it just wouldn’t be the same Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelan that Alanna has fallen in love with.
“I only wish things could be different.” Alanna whispered wistfully and tried to look happy for Keladry on her wedding day.
