Title: Sweet beginnings
Rating: G
Length: 322
Competitor: Vania
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: Kel meets Vania. The first in a series I am hoping to write called “Embers”.
Walking through the dim garden, Kel heard voices beyond the hedge.
“Let go!” A girl cried. “You’re hurting me.”
“You’re coming with me.” A man said gruffly.
Kel changed course and quickened her pace, towards the disturbance. The girl sounded frightened.
“I’m waiting!” The unknown girl protested. “Let me go, now!”
“Who are you waiting for?” The man asked harshly. “I won’t let you sit here and disgrace us further.”
Rounding a corner, Kel announced loudly, “She was waiting for me.”
She was confronted with a sight she wasn’t prepared for; Prince Roald was gripping the arm of a girl in her late teens, trying to drag her from an ornate stone bench. Despite the darkness, Kel recognised her as one of Roald’s sisters. The youngest one, she thought – Vania.
Roald dropped his sister’s arm like it burned him. “Kel.”
Kel hid her shock and disgust behind a smooth face. “Your Highness.” She turned to the girl. “Princess, I am sorry I took so long. I got lost in the dark.”
Roald narrowed his eyes, suspicious. “Kel, you don’t need to cover for her.”
Vania pushed Roald away. “You’re being abominable.” She sniffed, all fear gone. “You have my forgiveness, Lady Knight Keladry. Shall we go for our walk about the gardens, now?” She glared at Roald. “Shouldn’t you be getting back to your wife?” Unable to help herself, she added with a barely concealed taunt, “Unless you want her to think you’ve been about meeting mysterious ladies in the night.”
Roald gave Vania a fierce look Kel had never seen before. “This is not finished.” He stalked away angrily.
Once Roald was out of earshot, Vania turned to Kel. “Thank you,” she said, relief visible on her face. “Roald has been so edgy lately.” She gave Kel her brightest smile. “Now, would you kindly escort me about the gardens? Roald might take it in his mind to come check on me.”
