There was a sharp knock at the door. Kel dragged herself out of her bed, hastily pulling on a shirt and breeches. Bleary eyed, she saw the rising sun through the shutters – Gods, how had she managed to sleep past dawn? Half stumbling to the door, she pulled it open, peering into the hallway. Prince Roald stood there.
“Er- Kel. Good morning.” Roald greeted her nervously. “I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“Of course not, Your Highness.” Kel lied, bowing to him.
“Good.” Roald looked relieved. “Kel, about last night – I wanted to explain.”
Kel was confused for a moment - and then the events of the previous night flooded back to her. “Oh.” She replied, fighting to keep her face smooth.
Roald swallowed. “I was a bit, er, heavy handed with the Princess. She is very... frustrating.” He flushed bright red. “It has been a difficult month, and I lost my temper. I assure you, I did not mean any harm of it - it was wrong of me to grab Vania – and as soon as I find her, I will apologise.”
An awkward moment passed. Finally, Kel realised he was waiting for her to reply. “Of course.”
Roald shifted anxiously. “I wanted to let you know.” Another awkward moment passed. He turned to leave, and then paused. “Kel. I- I think it’s good. What you have with Vania, I mean.”
“Highness?” Kel was confused.
Roald gave her a small smile. “Your friendship. Vania needs more responsible friends – people who won’t lead her astray. I know you will be a good influence on her.”
“Of course.” Kel replied. Roald gave her a quick nod, and walked down the hallway, and out of sight.
She watched him, a feeling of dread rising in her stomach. At that moment, an arm snaked around her middle.
“Roald is right,” Vania murmured, close to Kel’s ear. “You’re an excellent influence.”
