Title: Mindelans Rating: G Length: 222 Competitor: Joren Fight: 1/E Summary: There's a new face at the Mindelan dinner table.
Kel kept her eyes on her plate, refusing to look up and around. Despite the stares she knew she was getting from her parents and her brothers, Kel found the roasted duck to be of particular interest. The skin was golden brown and crispy, and she knew that as soon as she sunk her teeth into it, it'd be like tasting ambrosia.
"I'm honoured that your parents have chosen to serve something familiar," the boy next to her whispered. "Perhaps I'll be brave enough to try some of the Yamani dishes you're all fond of next time."
Gripping onto her fork, she turned her head a slight fraction towards him. "I'm not buying this act of yours."
"I'm not acting, Kel," he explained gently, laying a friendly hand on her arm. Uncomfortable, and very much aware of his presence, she tugged her tingling arm back. When her family started conversing loudly, Joren leaned down -- his lips a hair's breadth away from her ear. "Believe me, Kel. You'll know, when I come out of the Chamber, a knight."
"How are you so confident you'll even pass?"
"I have a Mindelan for a knight-master, Kel. And Mindelans are now known to always succeed."
Surprised, she looked away at the earnest determination on his face.
