Title: Bright Star V Rating: PG Length: 153 Competitor: Joren Round: 1/E Summary: I should perhaps mention that these aren't entirely sequential because I'm writing them as they occur to me. But they exist within the same storyish frame thing. Yeah. ___________________________
He touches the iron bar of the Chamber door only once before his ordeal.
Midsummer storms are unusual so far inland, nonetheless; it is his fifteenth birthday and he is prepared to let that presence invade him in the sullen thunder of the deserted afternoon. And when it lets him go, he likes to think it is the maturity of his new age that gives him the strength to vomit in the nearest privy rather than all over the chapel floor, before walking, when he has the control, back to his room to collapse, shaking, on his bed.
The next time he goes to the chapel he is fifteen and a half, sitting in the furthest pew from the door and you will not break me. You cannot tempt me he thinks but does not say.
Only for a voice like dry leaves over stone to whisper back, I will not have to.
