Title: Distance
Rating: G
Length: 382
Competitor: Joren
Round/Fight: 1/E
Summary: What if Joren really had wanted a fresh start with Kel?
During his seven months as a squire, Joren of Stone Mountain had discovered that he still possessed the talents he'd thought had diminished ever since Lord Wyldon no longer considered him his 'star' pupil. Once the palace allowed a female - a blasted girl - to train alongside the males of the realm, all of the attention had shifted her way. He hadn't been successful, so far, in his duel campaign of brute force and subtle trickery to chase away Keladry of Mindelan, but he'd recently decided to let go of all his schemes. Who cared if Keladry became a knight? He had more important things on his mind.
Upon his return to the palace for the Midwinter holiday season, Joren, like every other young man-in-training, was surprised to discover that Keladry of Mindelan had begun to blossom into a nice-looking young lady. When she wore her plain gowns to the evening meal, all of the squires noticed exactly how much of a young woman Kel had become while they had been away with their knight-masters during the summer and fall months. Soon, Joren became obsessed with the idea of bedding the lady knight-in-training. After all, he'd already slept his way through most of the young women within the palace walls, so why not go the distance and achieve a 'perfect record' while he was still a squire?
Of course, Kel wasn't even thirteen yet, so Joren decided he'd have to take things rather slowly. The girl page had every reason to be distrustful of him and his motives and the handsome young squire knew he'd have his work cut out for him. He began to close the considerable distance between the two of them by requesting a "fresh start" with her.
"I would like to be friends," he had said to her in an unguarded moment.
When Kel smiled blandly at him and said that that would be pleasant, or some such non-committal statement, Joren collapsed the current physical distance between them, pulled her to his chest and kissed her gently on her soft, inexperienced lips, leaving her dazed and confused. And that was how he'd always wanted her to be, one way or another. Going the rest of the distance would become easier now - he was sure of it.
