Bright Star XII PG 125 Joren 1/E Out of sequence again. Randomness.
_____________________________
He is his mother’s brightest star, burning into nothing until he ceases to exist, or worse. Ends up undead. A cold white rock without light or heat, spinning in the vast emptiness of the sky.
Her sister looks at him with kestrel-eyes (hazel, blazing yellow around her pupils in a sunburst he despises) and sometimes he feels the challenge there. She knows of the kidnapping, but, lacking her sister’s judgment, she doesn’t understand that Keladry has already won. It makes him want to laugh, when he feels the hostility radiating out of her, directed at him, but he confines his reaction to an easy smirk which he knows only makes her more enraged. Honesty, like denial, is a fine balance of trust and contempt.

I love the undercurrent of denial in each of these pieces. This last line ties everything up so closely.
