Title: Sacrifices
Rating: PG (so far)
Series: PotS
A/N: I was reading the Kel/Wyldon thread and trying to figure out how to get them married, and then I got inspired! So this is a bit AU. Also, I like writing dialogue fics.
--
“You can’t marry him.”
“Neal, I don’t have a choice.”
“Yes, you do! You cannot do this, Kel. It’s unfathomable. And ridiculous.”
“I’m glad that you can think of good words to describe what I’m going through.”
“What you’re going through? Your parents are asking you to- to marry-“
“It’s reasonable, and if Orie hadn’t just gotten married I’m sure that she would be offered instead of me, and Mama and Papa gave me the choice. He’s willing to accept my lack of a dowry and he’s promised to gift cash to us- Mindelan will get profits it greatly needs after that ice storm that wiped out all of our orchards. And finally, they’ve haven’t had one offer for Avinar that would even partially fulfill our needs. We do have villagers who depend on us, and there’s Lachren, who will be a knight very soon as well as Eaton, and Anders thinks that Riayn wants to go for her knighthood. So does Malise, if Inness and Tilaine let her, and their other child Jareth is headed for instruction at the Royal University.”
“It sounds like you’ve done a fine job of convincing yourself.”
“Do you honestly think that for a minute I want to marry him? He’s been unmarried for twenty years ever since his wife died and he has no children, no male heir. It’s hardly ideal.”
“What about your shield? What will he do when you get called to duty?”
“We’re negotiating. It will be in the marriage contract- I’m only nineteen, so I won’t be expected to bear children for at least five years, in part because of the war.”
“I don’t like it.”
“I’m not asking you to, Neal.”
“You’re sure there’s no other way?”
“Mama and Papa- the king even spoke to them. He can’t grant us anything because of some old law limiting that sort of thing. It’s the exact same situation Cleon was put in, except he got to marry, well, Ermelian, who is perfectly agreeable and likes archery as much as he does.”
“I don’t know how you can be so practical about this. You’re going to marry the Stump.”
“I know.”
