Title: Second Time Around 8 Rating: PG Length: 125 words Competitor: Buriam Tourakom Round/Fight: 1/E Summary: Buri has issues and Kel helps her deal.
Note: lyrics and inspiration are from "Second Time Around" by Indigo Girls. Word count doesn't include the lyrics.
Are you my ally or my enemy? Do you have self-loathing or empathy? Can you keep me in your prayers, sister? Can you keep me in there somewhere? And, sister if you ain't go nothing good to say: don't say nothing at all.
“Do you know what it's like?” Buri asked, really studying Kel for the first time.
“To try to fit in, and then find out you never can? To pretend away your desire, even to yourself? To spend more time keeping your mouth shut, out of fear that you'll offend someone, than telling the truth?” She gave Buri a rueful smile. “I know. A bit.”
“Who--?” Buri began.
“No one, really,” Kel interrupted. “It's not something that happened. It's something that didn't, because I was too afraid.”
“Do you hate yourself for it?”
“Sometimes,” Kel admitted. “Buri, you're not the only one who feels this way.”
Buri looked at her, and nodded, and didn't say a word.

Wow, I love this. The whole series, it's fascinating to look at the clash of cultures, especially with Buri, I think. She doesn't get focussed on much in LR, and then by the time we see her in WM it's sort of assumed that she just assimilated into Tortall without any difficulty.

Thank you so much! I'm so flattered that you liked it. I wrote it mostly as a way of getting back to where I could write just Kel and Buri, and it was really hard because honestly I don't see Buri and Raoul splitting up (at least in a dramatic way like this). But yes, the cultural difference is something that's handwaved away a lot, so it's always interesting to think about.
