Title: Leavetakings Rating: PG Length: 200 Round: 2/D Competitor: Alanna Summary: Realisations on the march. Possibly very badly spelled ones, since I'm writing this on the fly in a rather poorly lit internet cafe.
“I miss you,” she said, slowly. “When you're not there.”
The simple statement hung between them: plain, untremored, though the tilt of Kel's head and the slow swallow that worked down her throat turned it into an alien thing. “You're not—not used to missing people, surely?” Alanna cleared her throat, half a laugh escaping. In camp light, her cheeks looked too thin for her face, her hair catching silver and tangles, fine strands broken after weeks on the road—in the mud—though miles of forest that only needed one lush season and a bit of neglect to turn Uncharted again, no matter how many maps were made.
“I miss everyone I love,” said Kel, shaking her head. “Everyone I like. But, Lioness...”
“My girl?”
A silent laugh, warmth and and the faint strainings over fire and distance and air, for shared heartbeat, the epithet catching in both their eyes. Their last night. “I can't say there's ever been, well, a lover I've missed. Not before.”
Not before, and who knew what after? The fire crackled, and Alanna, heedless of the tight, overheated stretch of her skin, reached for Kel's hand over the flames.

I love love love this! Kel missing everyone she loves, but never missing a lover before... that's just perfect.

Ah, you've tapped into something so Kel-ish.
