The silk is heavy in her hand, spined and stained, copper-on-indigo, rich skies and deep waters, danger lurking under smooth surfaces, spilling through painted air. Her own air. Alanna feels the weight of it, feels the urge there, the potential to open, to cut. Disguised strength—something she was sure she knew, at least until Kel bowed before her, presenting the shukusen end first, echoing her best friend, and filling the room with a country Alanna barely knew and did not understand.
“You had this made?”
Kel’s smile echoed the fan, fragile-strong. “I remember you watching, Lioness. And you...wanted.”
Alanna looked into the familiar face, and was more surprised at the blush on Kel’s face than the one that flooded her own.
