Kel made the mistake of glancing at the marks that marred her hands and forearms and promptly lost count.
“Well?” Alanna asked, raising her head around to look at Kel. “Are you convinced that I’m real yet?”
Kel returned to her attention to the scars that covered the older woman’s back, like a web of paths that told of the Lioness’s journeys. “These only make your legend greater. And all of them have healed.” She smoothed her touch over the jagged lines, the straight ones, the invisible ones -- and the riotous ones that spoke out loud.
“Not all,” Alanna murmured, and turning over, she directed Kel’s hand to a large, ugly scar peaking out from under her breastband and spanning across her left rib. “The King was coronated on this day, and the pain has never gone away.”
Kel averted her eyes, understanding the loss. “But there are few things that have come close to soothing it,” Alanna continued, reaching up to place a soft kiss on Kel’s lips. Beneath her hand, Alanna’s heart pulsated faster. “This is one of them.”

I love the symbolism of the scar, too.
