Title: The Face of It Rating: PG-13 Length: 205 words Competitor: Sabine Round/Fight: 2/C Summary: Another letter, and Kel's further thoughts about Lady Sabine.
My dear Ash,
Thank you for the suggestion. If you truly don't mind, maybe I'll find someone to take me up on it. Some of the village lads and lasses are quite comely, and having been in these hills all their lives, they surely must know a thing or two about the removal of mud.
I won't ask a fellow knight, though. We're soldiers, remember, and have that distressing tendency to die in the line of duty. I get attached too easily. My dear, I am thankful – again – that you are a stronger person than I.
I'll stop being gloomy, now, and since I promised not to bore you with the details of war, I'd better send this letter on its way.
With love, Sabine
The field report dated nearest that letter listed 2 knights and 15 soldiers among the fallen. According to the book's accompanying text, it was one of the worst battles of the entire campaign.
Kel read the text in amazement, then reread the letter. Who was this Lady Sabine, who could show such a brave, and even playful, face in times of so much trouble? And who was the mysterious Ash, who inspired Sabine to such love?

Ooh, I'm fascinated! So fascinated that I just realised I zoomed through all five of these without reviewing. :S So I'll give you an extra long one now! I think you have Sabine's voice perfectly, especially with the line about soldiers having the distressing tendency to die in the line of duty. I like the way that it was Kel's friends who found the book with the lady knight and then showed her, knowing she'd be interested, and I like that it was Sabine's great-nephew who put the book together, because Sabine doesn't seem at all like the type to have kids. Unlike Clary and Tom.

Thank you! I really appreciate your comments, as always, and quality is better than quantity anyway. And you know this is only the beginning...

Everything Ren says I can only echo. We're soldiers, remember, and have that distressing tendency to die in the line of duty. is a strong sentiment perfectly expressed, and I love Sabine's frank assessment of her own flaws

I was going to say that "We're soldiers, remember, and have that distressing tendency to die in the line of duty." was my favorite line but they already did I can't wait to see where this goes, and I'd really like to find out more about Ash--maybe a letter from her? Or Neal trying to find out what Kel is reading This is lovely, and I love the connection between Sabine and Ash, even from only two letters.
