Title: Bodies Rating: PG Length: 213 Round: 2/D Competitor: Alanna Summary: A follow-on to Faces
Cool hands on her head, on her back, steady in the lurching horror of the world. Cool skin, cool hair tracing over her cheek, unstained by sweat and sickness. Eyes large and rich and full of awkward hope.
“I’m dreadful.” Alanna’s voice hurts her own ears. Pain joins the bile cracking through her throat. “Go away.”
“No.” A small smile. “The one thing worse than holding you like this is watching you like this.”
“All sick and small and hideous?” She is shamed by the tears that spill, helpless, down her face. She wishes the kiss Kel presses to one cheekbone felt less sweet. “Gods, Kel. Why must there be sea?”
“You are never small. “
“Ha. So says Raoul’s pet giantess. And you left me with sick and--hideous!” A roll. Creaking walls and trickle-splash of water’s laughter. “Kel, I’m going to be sick again...”
“I know. I love you. I’m here.”
“Why?”
“Didn’t you hear me, Lioness?”
“No.” Gasps. Sourness and heaving and empty crashes of pain.
“Why tell me such things now?”
“No idea,” said Kel, laughing a little as she stroked her back. “And I was scared to come in, you know. But...if I can love you now—”
“—I’ll love you when I hate everyone less.”
Perhaps, in years to come, the conversation would be romantic.

I love your capacity for dragging loveliness out of the moments that are anything but.
