Summary: Kel is crippled.
Kel stared at the tiny glass blown animal in front of her. It was a rearing Lioness, tiny crafted and perfect. It was a bittersweet gift from Anders. Kel could have sworn it was right off the shield of Alanna the Lioness – the shield she’d spend hours examining in books. The shield she’d hoped to emulate. But she’d never get that chance.
With slow deliberate pressure, she tightened her hand around the glass animal. It was too much for the tiny figure, and it shattered in her palm. Pain seared through her hand, and Kel opened it quickly, letting shards mingled with her blood drop to the floor. She stared at the bloody mess of her hand for a moment, trying desperately to feel something.
But she couldn’t.
She stared down at the stump halfway up what had been her thigh. The healers said she was lucky to be alive after the Spidren attacked her, but Kel didn’t think so. She was a cripple, and she’d never be like the Lioness.
