Title: Feeding the Birds Rating: G Length: 241 Round: 3/A Competitor: Alanna Summary: Alanna torments
The weather was full of the soft kind of summer, that lulled and tricked and sparkled along the Olorun, coaxing people out past walls. Pages, sweating over punishment cleaning or mathematics, yearned for a free day. Alanna threw bread for the birds.
“I don’t think they eat bread.”
“Of course they do.”
Kel sighed, stretching and pushing her shirtsleeves higher up her arms. Her friend was practically languorous in the heat—as languorous as anyone as compact could manage, at least—though she threw with sharp aim. One the birds ruffled ominously. “They’re hawks,” she said.
“No, they’re not, dear girl.” Alanna lobbed another piece at the tree, causing the larger of the pair to spread his wings for balance, the heavy flap loud in still air. “They’re mages. Well, maybe Daine would be full hawk, but Numair isn’t really more than—”
“—in this shape, they’re hawks.” Kel laid a hand on her throwing arm. “They can’t eat what you throw at them. And…isn’t this a bit patronizing?”
“Yes,” said Alanna. “Yes, it is. But she’s half a Goddess and he’s even queerer, so I think they should survive.”
“…half a Goddess? Daine. No one ever mentioned that.”
“Oh, she bites if you do.” Alanna struck the male hawk in the chest, and the female shifted, fixing her eyes on the small woman’s face, talons chipping the branch.
Kel sighed. Alanna kissed her cheek.
“And people call us strange,” she said.

Oh, you write them with such serenity and calm. It's really lovely, and the humor is somehow blatant and subtle at the same time. <3

The really fun thing about the smackdown, I think, is that you CAN just write small, calm stories that have no point besides their own existence. I'm finding it ridiculously relaxing. (Now, that is. The final day is an entirely different affair!)

Why do I think Alanna is one of the only who could get away with something like this?

This just feels so - wonderfully domestic, and I just love it. It's so tranquil, and they're so easy with each other, and I love the nod to Daine and Numair.
