Raoul was smiling at her, moving his waterglass slowly from hand to hand. “Very intelligent birdies,” he said again.
Alanna sighed, looking out her window at the Swoop. She remembered whales. Sea lions. Numair striding into the sea like some flapping, sepulchral shadow.
“With that girl in the palace,” she muttered. “Everyone’s magicked.”
“You’re at risk of sounding bitter.”
“Oh. I know.” She let Raoul grin at her, and met his eyes. “Truly? Bandits? She defeated bandits with sparrows?”
“And her friends,” said the big man, “And just a few of the Own.”
“Doesn’t count.” Alanna laughed, gulping her own tea. “She lead them.”
“Yes,” said Raoul. “That, I can give you.”
