“I think it’s best that you stay away from her.”
Alanna had fought hard to stay calm, but it was always more challenging when she was dealing with Wyldon of Cavall. She clenched her fist several times before speaking. “And what do you mean by that, Cavall?”
His expression was stony and cold. Even his voice, when he spoke, was stiff. “The chit has fought hard to make a good reputation, even with the odds stacked against her. If word gets out about… this…,” he trailed off, frowning either at the notion of what was going on between Kel and Alanna, or at his inability to find a word to suit his disappointment. “Well, everything she fought for will be for naught.”
“Perhaps this kind of freedom is exactly what she and I have been fighting for all along,” she said tersely.
She saw something unusual cross his face; it was a flicker of genuine emotion cutting through the reserved, cool expression he always wore when dealing with her. Was it sadness?
Alanna blinked. It was much easier to hate Cavall when he acted like he didn’t care, that he was motivated by ideas outside his own heart. But he really was looking out for Kel’s best interest, even when he was a misguided fool.
“Let Kel make the decisions about her life, Wyldon,” she said with a deep frown. “She’s not your student anymore.”
