Title: Duplicity II
Rating: PG
Length: 270
Competitor: Sabine
Round/Fight: 3/B
Summary: Consequences.
“Kel, what – what’s wrong?” Sabine hesitated when Kel turned away from her outstretched hand. Her cheeks were wet, her eyes red. Only once she had composed herself did she turn back. It hurt Sabine to see that Yamani mask in place.
“I’m fine,” said Kel. She didn’t look fine.
Sabine frowned. “Are you sure? Do you want to talk about something?” She was beginning to get that feeling again, the feeling that started deep in her chest cavity. The last time she had felt this way, Mattes had walked out on her, running back to his partner, like she should have guessed he would. Looking at Kel now – taking in her defiant eyes and tear-stained cheeks – Sabine realised it was happening again.
“No,” she said. She was shaking her head, taking a step back.
“I’m sorry, Sabine,” Kel said, reaching out for her hand. Sabine withdrew her hand to her chest, trying to calm her breathing. She wanted to let Kel touch her, let her comfort her. But that wouldn’t help either of them, in the end.
“I’m sorry, Sabine,” Kel said again. The hurt was there, in her eyes. Sabine looked away. “I have to go back, I can’t – I can’t stay here any longer, when the future needs me.”
“I need you,” Sabine whispered.
“I’m sorry.” Sabine wished she would stop apologising. It only made her feel worse, adding another crack to her breaking heart.
Kel gave her one final look filled with regret before standing and walking inside. To pack her things, Sabine guessed, feeling numb already.
“But I love you,” she whispered after Kel’s retreating back.
