Title: Want
Rating: PG
Length: 395 words
Competitor: Vania
Round/Fight: 2/D
Summary: Vania would prefer Keladry stay away from her brother.
“It’s more a case of what I want, Lady Keladry, then what you can do for me.”
Vania’s voice drifts hauntingly, and the taunt is clear, even when spoken with a courtier’s smile and a princesses’ air. The elaborate dark curls, pinned and drifting over one shoulder, are all she can see, and she wishes that she could not see them at all, and that Neal had told her of the folly of paying her greetings to the youngest Conte. She smiles blandly at the younger girl, dressed in a vivid concoction of navy silk, pearls shining through her hair and at her throat, and smooths the soft green silk she wears absently.
“And what is it you want, your highness?”
“Stay away from Liam.” Kel stiffened, and confusion swept across her face.
“I don’t know what you mean.” She smiled, apologetically, mind whirring.
“Yes, Lady Knight, you do.” Vania’s hand clasped her wrist, companionably, and she tightened her hand, drawing Kel closer to her and looking up into her eyes. “Stay away from my brother.”
“Why would you want this? I barely see –“
“He is my brother. He has a future that will not include you. He will marry a Scanran noblewoman. Perhaps a Gallan princess, maybe. You are not meant to be.”
“Are you threatening me?” Kel’s voice dropped to a whisper, while Vania’s lips quirked in a smile. “What do you have to gain from this? Do you care nothing for the fact that Liam is happy?”
“You are of a lower class. You have a reputation. It’s merely a warning. I have more to gain from this than Liam does, and my brother’s happiness is not my concern. Only his duty.” Vania drawled, smirking.
“Liam will not succeed the throne. He could marry for love and not for allegiance. I have earnt my reputation from your people.”
“Many of my people think you nothing but a gallivanting whore. That is respect indeed. Liam will do his duty. Unsullied by you.” Vania’s eyes were hard, a contrast with the sweet smile on her face.
Kel returned her glare, before inclining her head and walking away, her composure slipping.
“Lady Kel.” She turned. Vania’s voice lowered to a seductive lilt, a bright smile sweeping slowly across her mouth.
“There are many things you can do for me. Many of them I want.”
