Title: Challenges II
Rating: PG
Length: 529
Competitor: Vania
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: Lalasa’s my girl, but I promised Kat 5 fics for Vania. She’s only getting two, and this is the second.
Later that night, as Keladry excuses herself, Vania makes sure Roald sees her slip out after her. She smirks at the rather brilliant shade of vermillion he turns, winks at him and disappears.
Keladry is nowhere in sight, and Vania is bewildered. No one knows this palace as well as she does – it’s one of the things she prides herself on! She walks down several halls, rounds a corner, and is startled when a hard, calloused hand catches her arm.
“You’re following me.” The voice is even, and Keladry steps from the shadows, her face smooth and an eyebrow quirked.
“I suppose you did learn some useful tricks up north...” Vania purrs, stepping forward and running her hands up the front of the knight’s tunic. “I bet there’s some you could teach me.”
Keladry’s face could be carved of marble. “I am flattered, my lady, but uninterested. If you’ll excuse me?”
Vania’s look of shock lasts only a moment while she shakes off the surprise of rejection. She had tried the wrong approach. She will try another. “It’s your highness, Lady Knight. Not “my lady”, and if you are brutish enough to turn me down so harshly I will thank you to address me properly.”
Kel stops, and turns slowly. For the first time there is some hint of an emotion on her face – confusion. Vania relishes in it, a point scored in her favor as Kel offers her the appropriate bow to her status. “Please accept my humblest apologies… Princess.”
“Only if you escort me to my rooms, Lady Knight. It’s not always safe to roam the palace alone at such an hour.” Kel has no choice but to offer her arm, and Vania takes it daintily.
As they walk she asks her idly about her time on the border. Keladry responds, with quiet courtesy. After a while it develops into a conversation. By the time they reach the royal wing she’s shocked to discover she is actually enjoying herself. There are very few people that can capture her attention. Even fewer can hold it for this long.
Vania relies on being able to read other people. It’s maddening to have no idea what her companion thinks, and it’s exhilarating at the same time. For once in her life she has no idea what would happen if she were to kiss the woman standing in front of her. The mystery is inescapably intoxicating. As Keladry turns to say goodnight, Vania stands on her toes and pulls the woman into a kiss.
She is completely unprepared for Kealdry to kiss her back, and startled as the woman presses her against the wall. The kiss is passionate, and the feeling of this strong body pressing against her overwhelms her and leaves her gasping. Then, it is done, and Keladry is bowing with a murmured “Your highness,” and her face is inscrutable as ever.
Vania is left standing in her doorway, weak-kneed and wide-eyed as she watches Kealdry walk away. For the first time that she can remember she has no idea what just happened and even less how to regain control.
