She knows that Liam has returned.
She can tell by the heavily echoing sound that echoes through her chambers, the curse that follows, the whisper of fine carved steel from a leather sheath.
“What were you thinking?” Liam’s voice is raw, painful and cold, too loud.
“Of your best interests.”
“And of who shares your bed, right? You have half the palace chasing after you, tugging at the trailing thread of a gown over a simper directed at the person standing next to them. And yet that’s not enough for you. All you Mithros damned want is what you can’t have. Never mind if it’s your brother’s lover or your cousin’s best friend.”
“I can’t help what I want.”
“But you can stop yourself from getting it.”
“You wouldn’t have worked out in the long term. You know it.” Vania’s voice became softer.
“I never got a chance to find that out.”
“You aren’t meant to be loved then left all of the time. I’m better with flings then you are.”
“It wasn’t just a fling this time.” Liam fell silent, and she knew his thoughts. They weren’t so different from her own, of Keladry, the way the light shone across her hair, the shine of her gold jewellery in contrast to her tanned skin, the flutter of her eyelash against her cheek.
“I’ll suggest to Papa that he looks for your bethroed in Tusaine. They’re into the polyamority there.”
“Oh, get out.” Liam smiled bitterly, and Vania grinned back.
“Neither of us won, Vania. She’s gone to King’s Reach.”
