Title: Shared Misery Rating: PG Length: 147 words Competitor: Wyldon Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: His mistake is in wondering if she feels the same.
“It’s over,” she whispered. “I lost it.”
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
He cursed himself for being relieved. The loss of a child – even an unborn one – should be a great sadness. But he was relieved – grateful that there was no bastard child to reveal his darkest secret to the world, let alone Cavall. He was thankful that Keladry would not have to be removed from this gods-forsaken war. Reassured that there would be nothing to linger with her, reminding her of the one night they had shared, in a fit of poor judgment and a lack of sensibility.
But he’d been through miscarriages before. He had mourned the loss with his wife before. It was not something to take lightly, physically or emotionally.
Looking at Keladry, he studied her smooth, impassive face and wondered what she was feeling. He knew that she cared for the things that needed the most protection – like an unwanted child born from a series of mistakes. She would carry this burden with her forever, even if she, like him, was relieved. But looking at her eyes, he saw that they gleamed brighter. Unshed tears.
They would both be haunted by this misery.

Ohhhh, my heart is just aching I like your characterization of Wyldon in this situation - he would feel both relieved and guilty. Such conflicting emotions.

Thanks. It would be hard for him not to be releived, all things considered.
