Title: Practice makes perfect
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: Behind closed doors
Summary: Tom comes to discuss something with Mattes.
A/N: I decided since I'd written plenty of Clary/Tom and Clary/Mattes, I needed to write some Tom/Mattes. This one's for Joa, just because.
“Afternoon, Mattes.” Tom gave him a cheerful grin.
Mattes stared back at him, confused. “Is Clary alright?”
“She’s fine. She thinks I’m having a busy day at work, but I had to come here to talk to you about her.”
Mattes swallowed hard and stood back to let him in, hoping he wasn’t going to say what he thought he would.
Tom looked around as Mattes shut the door. “We are alone, aren’t we?” Mattes gave a slow nod in reply, and Tom settled himself into one of the chairs. “I know about you and Clary. What you’ve been getting up to, I mean.”
Mattes was alert, his muscles tight. He had to be ready in case Tomlan did get angry – the master carpenter was strong enough to do him some serious damage if he was caught off his guard.
“Don’t look so worried,” Tom was saying. “I’ve known right from the beginning, Clary tells me everything.”
Mattes’s eyebrows shot up. “Yet you’re here behind her back,” he finally managed.
Tom shrugged. “It’s for her own good. I don’t want to ruin her birthday surprise.”
“Birthday surprise?” He’d known it was her birthday the following week, but he hadn’t heard anything about a surprise being organised.
“That’s what I’m here to talk to you about.” Mattes just watched him silently, and Tom continued. “See, I was thinking that I wanted to give her a good time on her birthday, but then I knew that you’d also want to give her a good time. So I thought mayhap we could give her a good time together.”
Mattes blinked. “You want me to help plan a party? She still hasn’t been able to live down the events of last year’s, I’m not sure she’d be keen.”
“No, I was thinking something less rowdy, just the three of us. Maybe we could go out for supper before you come home with us.”
“Come home and do what? I still don’t think she’d be keen to sit around drinking. It’s a bit soon to have another celebration for her with alcohol after her last birthday, even if it is just the three of us. She’ll accuse us both of teasing her.”
Tom grinned. “No, I meant come home with us for bed. To give Clary a good time on her birthday.” The look on the other man’s face as understanding hit him made Tom chuckle.
“You mean when you were talking about giving Clary a good time, you meant we’d both be…pleasuring her at the same time?”
Tom’s bright blue eyes were dancing with amusement. “If you’re up for it.”
Mattes nodded. “I think so. Would it be us both er, focusing our attentions on her, or do you mean for us to be…” he waved his hands between the two of them.
“It’s up to you. And Clary too, it’s her birthday. Although…I was sort of thinking that it would be funny to make our intentions for the evening clear by arriving home with her, shutting the door, making sure she was able to see and then kissing each other.”
Mattes felt himself grin. “The look on her face would be priceless.”
Tom grinned back. “Only if you want to though.”
Mattes paused, thinking. “Why don’t we practice now? So that it doesn’t feel quite so strange when we do it in front of Clary?”
The other man thought about this and then nodded. “My da always said that practice makes perfect.”
They both stood and awkwardly faced each other. Mattes inched closer and asked “Are you ready?”.
Tom nodded. “Are you?” Mattes nodded just as Tom had. Tom carefully put his hands on Mattes’s arms for balance, and leaned in to kiss him. He’d expected just to feel lips on lips, nothing more than that. Not emotional, just kissing for the sake of it, like the first time he had a sweetheart. Instead, it felt exciting, more like kissing Clary, but still…different. They pulled apart and stared at one another for a moment. Tom couldn’t help but wonder what the other man had thought about it. “It’s strange kissing someone the same height as me,” he finally managed.
“Clary’s quite a bit shorter,” they both said at the same time, and then blinked at each other before grinning.
“Well,” said Tom. “We know we can manage it. That’s good.”
“No,” replied Mattes calmly. “That wasn’t good.”
Tom blinked again. “It wasn’t?”
“Well, it was alright, I suppose. But I think we should practice some more.”
“You mean do it again?”
There was a definite gleam in the Dog’s eye. “You said it yourself; practice makes perfect.”
Tom chuckled. “So I did,” he agreed, and kissed him again.
