It was the middle of the day. The sun was high in the sky, and just about every man in the King’s Own was out in their practice courts, fiercely battling one another, in a final effort to finish their last match, so that they were free for lunch.
With a (not so mighty) effort, Kel snaked her blade in under Neal’s guard, to push the pommel of his sword out of his hand. The next moment, an glittering sword flew threw the air, landing near the fence of their court.
“I yield,” Neal said, raising his hands in something of parody, already bored.
Kel stood up from her guard position, and dusted herself off.
“That was very good, Neal! I’m so proud of you!” The sparkle in
Kel’s eye gave her away, as she stripped off her heavy fencing jacket, whacking it against a fence post to get rid of the dust.
“Har har. Oh look, lover boy’s here.” Neal lifted his head, to point the direction that the man was coming from.
“Who?”
“Dom.”
“Oh, hi Dom!” Kel was trying to be casual, really she was. But since they’d started courting a few months ago, and found out what he could do in bed, her belly turned to butterflies every time she saw him.
“Hi, Sweetheart. Stay there, please.”
Confused, Kel frowned. “Why?”
Slowly, Dom got down on one knee.
“Dom, what are you doing?!”
“Kel, you know I love you. Will you marry me?” Dom had pulled a small box out of his breeches pocket, and had opened it to really a simple gold band, with a diamond the size of one of Kel’s finger nails.
“No! Dom, what about the Own? I can’t let you leave, now that you’re a captain!” Hurriedly, Kel slammed the box, and had somehow managed to pull Dom into a standing position. The entire practice court was quiet.
“They changed the law this morning, Kel.” He held her face in his hands, looking into her eyes. “So will you marry me?”
Kel put her mouth on his, and said, “Yes.”
