Title: Dolls
Rating: G
Length: 266
Competitor: Dom
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Kel wonders whether she is a good mother.
Dom was a good husband. Too good to say anything to Kel about the long absences, the cold winters, and their empty bed. Too good to pressure her for the other children he desperately wanted. Too good to confront her about the lack of interaction she had with their daughter, who desperately needed and wanted her mother.
Too good for her, really.
Kel and Dom stood at the doorway of their daughter’s nursery, watching her play for a few moments. It had been weeks since Kel was last home. Syphelia was clutching a number of dolls, part of a dollhouse set Kel had bought her for the Midwinter just past. As Kel watched, she arranged her dolls around the wooden furniture of the small house. Kel walked in quietly, and knelt next to her.
“You’re playing with your dolls.” She said to her daughter, with a smile.
Syphelia looked up at her, with a serious expression. “Of course, mama.” She pointed to a doll with short brown hair and blue eyes, dressed in miniature men’s clothing. “That’s papa.” She pointed to a smaller doll with curly brown hair, wearing a pink dress. “That’s me.” She then held up the doll in her hand, a female doll with blonde hair. “This is Nerissa,” she said, naming her nursemaid. She proceeded to prop the dolls around the small wooden table.
Kel watched her daughter, confused. “Where am I, love?”
Syphelia pointed to the doll perched on her bed, far away from all the others. “You’re away saving the King.”
