Title: Future
Rating: G
Length: 317
Competitor: Dom
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Raoul discusses Kel and Dom’s future
“Kel, Dom,” Raoul said. “Take a seat, please.”
They did as they were bid. “Sir?” Kel asked.
Raoul passed each of them a drink of juice. “Kel, Dom, let me be frank. As you may know, Buri and I are unable to have children. My brother Rufus is dead, and my cousin Radley was disowned.” He sipped from his cup. “I have no heir. The line of Goldenlake will end with me, and on my death both it and Malories Peak will revert to the Crown. ”
Kel nodded, understanding. It was common practice with those Fiefs unlucky enough to die out. Dom fidgeted, not sure where the Knight-Commander was leading.
Raoul smiled at Kel. “You have been like a daughter to me, these past few years. A daughter when I hardly dared to hope for one.” He looked at Dom. “Dom... you are the closest I have ever had to a son, in all my years with the Own.” He fiddled with his cup. “I know you two are marrying soon. Kel, I know your own father has passed, and that your brother can hardly afford a dowry for you. Dom, I know you have to leave the Own, and your only source of income.”
The room was still for a moment.
“Let me name the two of you my heirs. I will be secure in the knowledge I am leaving Goldenlake and Malorie’s Peak in capable hands. You will have your future secured.” Raoul, not one for grand speeches or gestures, flushed slightly.
Kel was moved beyond words. “Sir- Raoul- I... don’t know what to say.”
Dom raised his eyebrows, stunned. “Sir, that is a very generous offer.” He looked to Kel for an indication of her feelings. She was staring at Raoul.
“Think on it.” Raoul advised. “Talk to each other.” He grinned. “There is no urgency, of course. I still have a few years left.”
