Summary: Kel’s reluctant to tell her friends the real reason she’s not interested in romance.
“So when will you settle down and get married, Kel?” Faleron asked, joining the group of friends who had gathered in the library during a Midwinter party. His pretty wife, Lady Elianora, stood at his side.
“Well, she would need to find a fellow first,” Neal drawled lazily.
“I’m too busy for that,” Kel said, fingering the rim of the goblet she held.
“No one’s too busy for love,” Owen commented, shaking his curly head. “I think you’re just too stubborn.”
“He has a point,” Merric said cheerfully. “If Owen can find someone to married, I think it’s safe to say that you could, Kel.”
Owen laughed along with the others. He had been the butt of the jokes since his betrothal had been announced years before – if Owen could find a wife, the Scanrans would fly back to their homes! Kel had to admit that she’d been as astonished as everyone else to learn of his betrothal and subsequent marriage, but she also had it on good authority that young Lady Margarry was as much of a scrapper as he was.
“So, in other words,” Kel said, “since Owen managed to find the one woman in all of Tortall who is his emotional counterpart, I should be able to as well? Never mind that I’m not looking for that right now?” Because I’ve already found it.
“Don’t you want to have babies?” Seaver asked. His question was met with a raised eyebrow from Elianora.
“Yes, because all women think about is having babies,” Yuki said, hiding her sarcastic amusement behind her fan.
“Didn’t you know that?” Kel asked her Yamani friend. “All this time that I’ve been on border patrol, and working with the armies up north, I’ve been pining for a man and for lots of babies.”
“It’s the natural course of things, isn’t it?” Seaver asked. “We grow up, we get our shields, we have families.”
“Yes, but your having a family doesn’t require taking time out of your duties,” Kel pointed out. “Can we move onto something more important – like discussing the news from the south?”
“No, I’m afraid we all want to know what’s going on in the north, Kel,” Neal replied, shaking his head. “Have you not even had time to go riding with my cousin? You seemed interested in him, at one point.”
“I don’t have time. Lord Wyldon is keeping me occupied,” Kel said, exasperated. “Now can we move on to a different topic?”
Owen frowned, his expression confused. “But – Kel, he isn’t your commanding officer anymore. You’re at Steadfast. How’s he in charge of your duties?”
Caught off guard, Kel was unable to keep her expression even. “He – I – ” She made the mistake of looking at Neal, who looked horrified as the truth dawned on him. She shook her head just a hair, forbidding him to reveal what he’d realized.
“She’s been patrolling between Mastiff and Steadfast,” Neal said quickly, “so she’s been working with both district commanders.” As soon as the conversation was completely redirected, he pulled her aside. “You, my dear friend, owe me an explanation.”
