Title: An Offer She Can’t Refuse
Rating: PG
Length: 456 words
Competitor: Wyldon
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: When Wyldon proposes, Kel has questions.
“Are you offering to make an honest woman of me?” Kel asked, smiling the slightest bit. She knew all too well that Wyldon was not comfortable with every aspect of their relationship. In the beginning, he had agreed to keep things secret only because she asked. He had hinted at marriage several times, but this was the first time he had asked her outright.
“We’re not getting younger,” he replied, rubbing the arm that had been raked by hurrocks so many years ago.
“Why now?” she asked. She didn’t mean to sound contrary – she honestly didn’t understand.
“Because I love you,” Wyldon said matter-of-factly. “And I have a tradition of marrying women I’m in love with.”
She kissed the sardonic smile off of his face. “You loved me a year ago, Wyldon,” she said. “So I repeat – why now?”
He crossed the sitting room deliberately, looking out the window to the forests of Cavall. “I can be patient, Keladry,” he said slowly. “When we first became lovers, you were afraid to commit because you worried about your own supposed fickle nature.”
Kel nodded, though he was not looking at her. She had worried. She had respected him, found him attractive, loved him, even – but hadn’t she felt that way about other men in the past?
“It’s been two years. Three since I lost Vivenne. I think the time is right for me to remarry, and for you to realize this isn’t just a flight of fancy.”
Kel sat by the fire, petting one of the hounds that came to her. “You’re right,” she said finally, her voice low. “You always are.”
He turned back to her, a hint of a smile crossing his handsome face. “So you will consider it?”
She was not afraid of marriage, as she once had been. The idea of spending her life with one man – a man who looked at her with such love in his eyes – no longer made her feel like running away. Of the few men in her life she had loved, Wyldon was the easiest to express that affection to. She didn’t know if it was because she was older and wiser, or if it was due to that sense of rightness she felt each time they embraced one another.
Kel could imagine herself living with Wyldon, spending their lives together – maybe even having children. He knew her better, even, than Raoul or Neal. The idea of being the wife of Owen’s father-in-law was worrisome, but even he had learned to take some things in stride, and had asked her once if she’d ever given it thought.
“I will,” she said, meeting his eyes.
“You will consider it?” Wyldon asked, his expression hopeful.
“I will marry you.”
