Title: The Invention of the Kiss
Rating: PG
Length: 522 words
Competitor: Wyldon
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Kel contemplates the origin of kissing.
It was something as simple as two mouths pressed together. They leaned toward each other, and she could feel his warm breath against her skin. She inhaled sharply in anticipation, feeling every nerve in her body twitch in excitement.
It was a funny thing, the kiss. What had possessed early humans to express themselves with their lips? What magnetism brought those ancient mouths together? Did they feel soft against one another, or were their lips hard, like his? Did that prehistoric woman put her hands on the man’s face, feeling clean-shaven skin, like Kel did now? Or was that man, so many years before, bearded?
Their lips parted slightly, and she tilted her head a bit more to one side as she leaned into him. Her eyes fluttered open again, and she found that his brown eyes met hers briefly before his eyelids drifted shut.
She wondered, idly, if kisses were always so intimate. Was it an act of romantic love that brought about the first touch of lips from one person to another, or was it shared between a mother and a child? Maybe a baby was born, and the mother was so overcome by its preciousness that she touched her lips to its head.
And when did tongues get involved, like hers was now? Did the first woman who ever kissed a man feel her heart pound in her chest, or was it a mild curiosity that led to such tender exchanges? And did he wrap his arms around her, clutching her so tightly that her breath caught in her throat?
Was it possible, even, that the first woman to share a kiss was lost in thoughts in order to escape the reality of that very kiss? Because Kel was split, wrapped between the toe-curling sensations and the need to forget how much she loved them. The need to forget that she was falling in love with him.
It had been untested until now – an exchange of words, a meaningful look, or the jolt of delight when fingers accidentally brushed against each other. But now they knew that it was more than an idle curiosity and momentary attraction to one another. Her hands slid around his back, caressing his broad shoulders. His slid under her shirt, making her gasp against his mouth.
“My lord, the new knights have arrived and are awaiting their orders,” a voice called from outside the office door.
Was that very first kiss followed by some sort of interruption? Did the participants jump away, barely able to look one another in the eye? Kel wondered if the woman felt incomplete, once she knew what it was like to be locked with another in such an intimate gesture. Sex was intimate, but it served a purpose. A kiss, especially a kiss like the one she had shared with Lord Wyldon, was an intimate gesture whose sole purpose was intimacy.
And judging by the shake of his head, the confusion on his handsome face, and the guilt that made her stomach twist in torment – this was an intimacy that she would not be permitted to experience again. Pity.
