-----
“So you’ve heard what they’re saying then I take it.” Kel bit her lip and studied Wyldon nervously. Wyldon continued to calmly study his report.
“What? The incessant drivel of those vicious small minded gossip mongers?” Wyldon glanced up at her. “I don’t pay any attention to them. What are they going on about now?”
“Uh ... the whole thing between you, and me, ... and Dom.” Kel didn’t think Wyldon looked particularly angry or hurt – but then again you can’t always tell with him. She decided he had a right to know the rest too. “And well they’re saying how you’re ancient, and Dom is, well, Dom.” Still no reaction from Wyldon. “They’re impugning your honour too! Saying you’re taking advantage, that even when I was a page ... I can’t let that stand. You can’t.”
“Oh, that business.” Wyldon put down his report and took her hand in his. “Small minded and spiteful people will always resort to personal attacks when they don’t get their way.” He laid a gentle kiss on her knuckles, which were white from being clenched so hard. “Pay no mind to such attacks. It is beneath your notice. They’re beneath your notice.”
“I know, I know. But it’s just so hard. I mean, yes, some of my friends are joking about the same things. But it’s different with them – they don’t mean anything by it. But when these people, who don’t even know you, start saying these things, which aren’t true ...”
“It doesn’t matter.” Wyldon interrupted. He didn’t tell her that it didn’t matter because it was his honour they were insulting – not hers. It would be a completely different story if they were insulting her. “Just ignore them, and eventually those stormwings will move on to some other poor soul.”
“You’re right I suppose. Besides, I don’t suppose I can challenge everyone to a joust, most of them are ladies”
