Title: Never to Hold Rating: PG Length: 185 words Competitor: Raoul Round/Fight: 1/C Summary: Some things a man can't just drink away.
-----
He lost count after the eighth tankard.
Raoul was ashamed of himself, but it didn’t stop him from pouring himself another drink. This was, after all, a special occasion, wasn’t it? Any man would want to celebrate the birth of his son.
Except this man could never claim his son.
Well, he could. But he was a coward who feared the repercussions.
It wasn’t even the infidelity that ripped out his heart, and it also wasn’t Buri’s trusting eyes. It was the understanding in Kel’s face when he said, regretfully, he could not claim the child. Her belly had barely been swollen then, but there was a life in there that he had started.
A life of which he so desperately wanted a part, and was forever doomed to be pushed to the periphery. Whomever Kel married would be the man to raise the child—his child—and Raoul would be the uncle who watched him a little too hungrily, a little too protectively.
He toasted the empty chair across from him, and drank to the boy from Mindelan he would never get to hold.

Raoul's not gonna be able to climb out easily this time, I think.
