Title: Best Knight There Is
Rating: G
Length: 332
Competitor: Owen
Round/Fight: 1/D
Summary: Owen and Wyldon discuss Kel while holding Owen and Margarry's first born.
Owen was rocking slowly, cooing joyfully down at the tiny infant in his arms, his first child. Wyldon stood next to him, one of his long fingers captive in the child’s miniscule hand, but he didn’t mind, Margarry was safe and sleeping soundly in the next room. His gaze moved slowly from his grandson to his son-in-law and former squire.
“I never expected you to fall in love with my daughter.”
Owen stopped his swaying and looked up at the man he admired more than any other, surprise written plain on his face.
“Why not?” he asked, “Margarry’s a lovely girl! And she’s very smart, and she likes to read as much as I do, and—“
Wyldon cut him off, “I assure you that I am aware of all my daughter’s admirable traits, Jesslaw, I did help to raise her.”
“Then why—“ Owen began, but the baby began to fuss. After a few minutes of renewed swaying and soft words later the infant yawned and closed its eyes.
“I always assumed you were besotted with Keladry, she certainly seemed to have a soft spot for you,” Wyldon said in undertones, and he was mildly bewildered when Owen began to laugh quietly.
“My Lord,” he smiled, “I don’t think I was ever in love with Kel, but I do think she’s the best knight there is—except you, of course.”
“She is a wonderful knight, though you are wrong. Keladry is a better knight than myself.”
“Suit yourself sir,” Owen grinned. “Kel’s going to be here tomorrow.”
“Again?” Wyldon asked blandly.
“She’s told Margarry she wants to help with the baby, but I’ll bet there’s another reason she visits Cavall so often. My Lord.”
Wyldon scowled at Owen. “I’m going to look in on Margarry.”
“My Lord,” Owen called as his father-in-law opened the door to his and Margarry’s room. “It’s been over a year since Lady Vivenne… That is to say, Margarry and I think you would be happy with Kel.”
