“I’m pregnant,” Kel says slowly.
Baird nods. “Yes.”
“But...my charm...” she stammers, confused.
So many times has he been in this situation, yet this time it feels so much more tragic. He doesn’t know what to think himself, , and for the first time, he truly sees how simply such an error could occur. No words can console her, he understands her well enough for that.
“Sometimes a charm can be faulty or lose its power as it grows old. Other times the body itself can grow stronger than the charm’s protection.” His voice is detached as he distances his own emotions, knowing that she needs him at this moment.
Kel nods, and he can see she is straining to stay composed. So he wraps his arms around her, pulling her close, and she breaks, sobbing in his arms as he tries to comfort her.
