He worked wonders. Duke Baird’s skills, his Gift, as a Healer was renowned throughout Tortall and its neighbours. He saved those that others thought beyond saving. Only the Lioness could rival his Gift – and even then not by much. When he was presented with severed limbs, torn flesh, spilled guts and half-dead hearts, he knew exactly what to do. He didn’t panic. No matter how tired he felt, how drained he was by a full day of healing, he knew exactly what to do. How to fix it. How to save a life. The task may be daunting, but it didn’t scare him.
But when he held a crying Keladry close to him, and gently stroked her hair. He panicked. He had no idea what to do. He didn’t know how to fix it. He couldn’t bear to see her cry – and it scared him like nothing else ever had.
