"You knew this couldn't last forever."
She glowered at him. She supposed on some level she had known, but she hadn't wanted to accept it. Acceptance would have meant surrender, and she hadn't wanted that.
"That isn't the point," she replied.
"It had to end sometime. We've been at it for hours."
Had it really been that long? She felt stiffness begin to set in, even as she thought it.
"There's nothing you can do."
Kel sighed. "You're right."
"Of course," he acknowledged, and she realised she'd never seen him so smug. Once more, she revelled in the privilege of getting to know him in private, and seeing facets of a man who kept so much hidden. "Checkmate."
