"What are you reading?"
"What are you reading?" said the voice again, a little louder this time. Kel sighed and turned to look over her shoulder, trying to keep her face polite, though she was feeling slightly irritated - she hated it when someone interrupted her when she was reading.
"It's a history on Japanese politics," she told the young man sitting behind her. From where Kel was sitting, she could see he wore a pair of well-worn black jeans, and his t-shirt shouted THE WHO in large, garish letters.
He nodded as if he was interested, though Kel thought he was probably regretting asking about it now. "It's for a class I'm taking," Kel continued, not really knowing why she felt the need to justify herself to this stranger on the bus. "But it's very interesting."
"Sounds like it." Kel couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic or not. With a faint smile, she turned back around to face the front and bent her head to continue her book. But he didn't take the hint.
"I'm Fal," he said. He was leaning over the back of her seat now, his arm almost touching her shoulder. A coil of dark hair had escaped from behind his ear and hung down over his cheek. What was it with strangers on the bus always wanting to make conversation? she wondered.
"Kel," she replied shortly. She wasn't exactly eager to continue the conversation, but she considered herself to be a polite person. Perhaps he would lose interest in his own time.
He didn't speak to her again. When she turned slightly to glance behind her, he was still leaning on the back of her seat, but he was looking out of the window at the passing cars. Kel felt relieved that he had stopped, but also a little annoyed - why introduce himself and talk to her if he was just going to ignore her for the rest of the trip?
It didn't matter, she told herself firmly. At least now she could read in peace.
She managed to finish the chapter just in time for her stop. Shoving the book into her bag, she got up and waited for the bus stop.
"This your stop?
"Yes," she said, trying not to look at him.
Sitting forward, he hung over the back of her seat again. He had some sort of woven bracelet on his wrist. Kel cleared her throat impatiently; there was a truck in front of the bus that refused to move, with her stop only a few metres away.
"Do you want to go out sometime?"
She turned and stared at him; her mouth was probably hanging open in shock and surprise. "What?"
He shrugged. "Do you want to go out with me sometime? Coffee or something, you know?"
Kel's brain seemed to be working slower than usual today, and it took her nearly a minute to think of a reasonable excuse. "Um, sorry, I'm pretty busy." Okay, so that was a lame excuse.
He didn't seem too put out by her refusal. "That's cool."
When the truck finally moved and the bus pulled over, Kel hurried to get off. Stepping onto the pavement, she couldn't help but glance back up at where the young man had been sitting. He had headphones on now, his lips moving minutely as he sang along under his breath.
Shaking her head, Kel swung her bag strap over her shoulder and turned to walk home.
