Title: Second Place
Rating: PG
Length: 273
Competitor: Raoul
Fight: 2/A
Summary: Raoul gets Neal’s approval, and learns an interesting lesson.
“You don’t seem very surprised,” Raoul concluded, leaning back in his seat.
Neal shrugged before stretching. “Kel has much respect for you, my lord. And it’s hard not to miss the fact that you’re home more often than you’ve ever been.”
Wincing, Raoul conceded to that. As much as he disliked how it affected his image, he worried more for Kel’s reputation. A knight sleeping with his former squire – his female squire – would not be looked upon with fondness.
“I also did have the Lioness for a knight-master.”
Raoul’s eyes widened in shock, until Queenscove’s face contorted in horror. “No! Not like that. I swear on the mercy of the Black Realms. But you know what I mean. Don’t you?” The pleading for understanding nearly made Raoul laugh – for the young man had been bound to hear scandals of similar pedigree, and Neal was certainly not stupid.
“I’m glad it doesn’t bother you, then.” Raoul was content with how steady his voice had come out, absent of nerves and uncertainty.
“I’ve no desire to hear about your training together between the sheets, if that’s what you’re asking. Besides, there are far more distressing bedmates between ranking officers as of recent to be known."
Raoul was not ashamed to admit that his interest was most undeniably piqued, and the goblet of ale in his hands was temporarily forgotten. “I didn’t know you were as keen on palace gossip as the kitchen maids.”
“You aren’t the first, you know.” Neal rolled his eyes at Raoul’s confusion, and raised his drink in toast. "As I said, I was Alanna’s former squire. So she definitely wasn’t mine.”
