The Result of Argumentation
When he finished talking, there was a short silence. “So,” Kel said slowly. “You used all of this philosophical argument stuff to infer... that I was either having an affair with my training master or having one with my knight master? How does that get you to any conclusion at all?”
Neal glanced up from the parchment before him, looking a little embarrassed as he raked a hand through his own thinning hair. “Actually, I followed you that night to see which way you turned. I saw you head for Lord Curly Hair.”
If her hair hadn’t been silvering already at 34, Kel could have believed at times that Neal must be the cause of her greying head. “There is such a thing as too much curiosity!” she snapped, feeling a little flustered.
“Yes, yes,” he muttered, flapping his hand in a familiar, dismissing manner. “Now, would you mind terribly reminding me where we left off? I want to make sure I don’t miss a thing.”
“Neal!” Kel exclaimed, staring at her friend and his pen with a mixture of horror and amazement. “Are you taking a transcript of this conversation?”
“Of course not,” Neal answered loftily, waving his hand in a vague manner at Kel even as he dipped his pen back into the ink jar. Kel let out a sigh of relief.
“Because,” he continued, “it can’t be a genuine transcript if I’m only recording what I’m saying.”
